Fortnum & Mason — The Double Helix Staircase

Fortnum & Mason — The Double Helix Staircase

Hodkin and Jones were commissioned to carry out the fibrous plasterwork for the new Double Helix Staircase at Fortnum & Mason, an ambitious architectural feature within one of London’s most celebrated retail interiors.

The project demanded exceptional precision and craftsmanship, particularly in the execution of the staircase soffits. The continuously flowing curves required carefully formed moulds and meticulous installation to achieve a seamless, sculptural finish that complements the elegance of the surrounding space.

In addition to the staircase, Hodkin and Jones produced and installed a series of bespoke plaster columns, detailed with crisp mouldings and integrated mirrors. These elements contribute to the rhythm and structure of the interior while maintaining a refined, understated presence consistent with Fortnum & Mason’s heritage.

This project exemplifies the strength of fibrous plaster in complex architectural applications — combining traditional techniques with contemporary design to deliver durable, visually striking results.
